Guide
An Image Watermark tool overlays text or a semi-transparent image onto a photo to mark it as your intellectual property, deter unauthorised use, or brand it with your name or logo. Watermarking is the standard practice for photographers, artists, stock image libraries, and content creators who share their work online while wanting to retain visible attribution.
Copyright protection and attribution: Once an image is published online, it can be easily downloaded and reused without credit. A visible watermark in the corner of a photo makes the attribution persistent — the credit travels with the image even when it's shared or reposted out of context.
Deterring unauthorised commercial use: A watermark doesn't prevent copying, but it makes the copied image commercially useless for most purposes. A business cannot use a watermarked product photo in an advertisement; a watermarked portrait cannot be printed and sold without the copyright holder's permission becoming visually obvious.
Client proofing: Photographers share watermarked proofs with clients for selection before delivering the purchased, unwatermarked final images. This workflow allows the client to evaluate composition, focus, and expression without receiving the final deliverable before payment.
Portfolio presentation: Artists and designers posting work-in-progress or portfolio images online add watermarks to establish clear ownership while the work is visible to prospective clients.
Brand identity: Consistently watermarking social media images with a logo or website URL builds brand recognition — viewers who see the image later can identify and return to the original creator.
Text watermarks: Simple, easy to create, can include copyright symbol, photographer name, website URL, or © Year. Text can be rotated, positioned in a corner or tiled across the entire image ("all-over" watermarking), and styled with opacity control.
Image watermarks: A logo or badge overlaid on the photo. More professional in appearance for brand-conscious use, requires having a transparent-background logo file (.png with alpha channel).
Opacity: Watermarks set at 30–50% opacity are visible enough to deter copying but subtle enough not to significantly obscure the underlying image. Stronger watermarks (70–100%) are used when proofing — intentionally making the image unsuitable for use until purchased.
The UtilsGo Image Watermark tool applies watermarks entirely in your browser — your photos are never uploaded to any server.
