Why numbers are written in words

Cheques and financial instruments: Bank cheques require the amount in both numerals and words. The words serve as a fraud-prevention mechanism — it is much harder to alter "Twenty-Five Thousand" than to change the digit 25,000 to 75,000 by inserting a 7. When the numeral and the words conflict on a cheque, most banking regulations default to the written words.

Indian vs. International numbering systems
