An Image Blur and Pixelate Tool applies blur or pixelation effects to selected areas of an image, obscuring or anonymising specific regions while leaving the rest of the image intact. This is an essential privacy protection technique used by journalists, HR departments, content moderators, social media users, and anyone sharing images that contain information that should not be publicly visible.
Blur (Gaussian blur): Averages each pixel with its neighbours, creating a smooth, soft, unfocused appearance. The greater the blur radius, the more obscured the content. Heavily blurred regions are very difficult to reverse-engineer, making blur a strong privacy tool for text and identifying information.
Pixelation (mosaic/tile effect): Divides the region into a grid of large coloured squares, each representing the average colour of the source pixels in that cell. The resulting blocky, mosaic appearance completely removes recognisable shapes from the region. Pixelation is more visually obvious than blur but equally effective at obscuring content.
License plates and vehicle registration: When sharing photos of streets, parking areas, or incidents, blurring license plates protects the privacy of vehicle owners and prevents misuse of registration information.
Faces and identities: Journalists, documentary photographers, and social media users obscure the faces of individuals who haven't consented to being photographed in public contexts, or who need anonymity for safety reasons.
Sensitive documents: Sharing a screenshot of a document that contains a partial account number, signature, or personal ID number requires blurring those specific fields before sharing.
Screen recordings and screenshots: Blurring passwords, API keys, access tokens, or confidential data visible in a screenshot before posting it publicly (in documentation, support forums, or tutorials).
Medical images: Blurring identifying information โ patient names, dates of birth, medical record numbers โ from medical images or screenshots before sharing for educational or consulting purposes, in compliance with patient privacy regulations.
Contact information: Blurring phone numbers, email addresses, and home addresses in screenshots shared on social media.
