The Gregorian calendar: background

The Gregorian calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in October 1582, replacing the Julian calendar which had accumulated a 10-day drift from the astronomical solar year over 1,600 years. The key correction: century years (1700, 1800, 1900) are only leap years if they're also divisible by 400 (so 1900 was not a leap year but 2000 was). This adjustment keeps the Gregorian calendar aligned with the Earth's orbit to within 1 day per 3,236 years.

Today the Gregorian calendar is the international civil standard used by virtually every country for commerce, diplomacy, and official records — even countries that maintain a separate traditional calendar (like Nepal's Bikram Sambat) for cultural and religious purposes.
