An Image Format Converter converts image files between different file formats โ JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, TIFF, and others โ changing not just the file extension but the encoding, compression algorithm, and capabilities. Different image formats have different strengths, and choosing the right format for a specific use case meaningfully affects file size, visual quality, and compatibility.
JPEG (.jpg/.jpeg): Uses lossy compression (permanently discards some image data to achieve small files). Best for photographs and complex images with many colour gradations. A high-quality JPEG photo might be 300โ800 KB versus 5โ15 MB for the same image as uncompressed TIFF. The downside: JPEG does not support transparency, and saving a JPEG multiple times (re-encoding) degrades quality.
PNG (.png): Uses lossless compression (retains all image data exactly). Supports full transparency (alpha channel). Best for screenshots, logos, icons, illustrations, and images with text overlays โ any image where crisp, exact colour reproduction matters more than file size. PNG files are larger than equivalent JPEGs for photographs.
WebP: Google's modern image format that achieves significantly better compression than both JPEG and PNG for comparable quality โ typically 25โ34% smaller than JPEG. Supports both lossy and lossless modes, and supports transparency like PNG. WebP is supported by all modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari 14+, Edge) and is the recommended format for web images.
GIF (.gif): Limited to 256 colours per frame, making it poor for photographs. Its key feature is animation โ GIF is still widely used for short animated clips on the web. For static images, PNG is strictly superior.
BMP (.bmp): Uncompressed raster format. Very large files; rarely needed for modern web use but sometimes required by legacy Windows software or certain print workflows.
All conversion runs in your browser using the Canvas API โ your images are never uploaded to any server.
Convert to WebP for maximum web performance - 25-35% smaller than equivalent JPG files.
PNG and WebP conversions maintain alpha transparency channels for graphic design use.
Adjust output quality percentage to precisely balance file size against visual fidelity.
