Guide
The Nepali Calendar displays dates in the Bikram Sambat (BS) calendar system — the official national calendar of Nepal. While Nepal uses the Gregorian calendar for international business and government administration, the Bikram Sambat calendar is central to Nepali cultural, religious, and civic life: public holidays, government notifications, land registration documents, birth certificates, school academic years, and festival dates are all expressed in BS.
The Bikram Sambat calendar is a Hindu solar calendar that runs approximately 56 years and 8.5 months ahead of the Gregorian calendar. As of 2081 BS (2024/2025 AD), it is Nepal's civil calendar by law. The calendar has 12 months named in Sanskrit (Baisakh, Jestha, Ashadh, Shrawan, Bhadra, Ashwin, Kartik, Mangsir, Poush, Magh, Falgun, Chaitra), with each month ranging from 29 to 32 days depending on the year. Importantly, the Bikram Sambat months do NOT correspond to fixed Gregorian month lengths — the conversion requires a lookup table of actual month lengths for each year, which is why simple arithmetic conversion is not possible.
Nepali residents and diaspora: For scheduling around Nepali public holidays, cultural events, and religious observances, a BS calendar is the primary reference — even for those living abroad who follow Nepali traditions.
Government and legal professionals: Land deeds, court filings, birth/death certificates, and official Nepal Government documents use BS dates. Lawyers, notaries, and government employees need quick BS date reference.
Banks and financial institutions in Nepal: Fiscal year planning, loan maturity dates, and annual report deadlines in Nepal are expressed in BS.
